How many different logos is it possible to fit on the front of one wine bottle? The Winemaster’s Reserve Sauvignon Blanc Chardonnay 2011 from Nederburg also carries the branding of Woolworths, MasterChef SA and M-Net: the wine being an exclusive bottling by the Paarl cellar on behalf of the retailer to promote their mutual involvement as sponsors of the reality TV cooking show on subscription television channel M-Net. Broadcast time is 19h30 on Tuesdays (for an 18-week period, having started on 20 March) as a sticker on the bottle helpfully reminds shoppers.
The wine has got mass appeal for all the right reasons. The specifics of the blend are 60% Sauvignon Blanc fermented in tank and 40% Chardonnay, partly tank- and partly barrel fermented, no malolactic fermentation to preserve freshness. Aromatically, there’s lime, lemon, yellow peach and a hint of vanilla. The palate shows plenty of juicy fruit offset by bright acidity. As the nose suggests, there’s lotsgoing on in terms of flavour and yet the green character imparted by the Sauvignon doesn’t entirely gel with the more yellow fruit which the Chardonnay brings. Very attractive but lacking real complexity. For R49.95 a bottle from your nearest Woolies, difficult to quibble with the quality relative to the price. Score: 15.5/20.
