Eikehof, Franschhoek

Back in 1902 - long before the Franschhoek Vignerons laid claim to Sémillon as "their" grape and probably at the tail end of the variety's fashion peak in the 1800s - a farmer in the Franschhoek valley planted a small block of bush vine Sémillon on what today is Eikehof wine farm.

Fairview, Paarl

Goats do Roam. In danger of being a little too glib, perhaps, but that lot at Fairview have pulled it off with aplomb. The name is a play on Côtes du Rhône, the area in southeast France famed for its Shiraz; the wine itself is a blend of Pinotage and an assortment of typical Rhône varieties such as Shiraz, Cinsaut, Carignan, Grenache and Mourvèdre.

Groene Cloof, Swartland

Havana Hills, Tygerberg

The grey dome of Elephant's Mountain, near Cape Town, owes its name to the ghosts of 40 pachyderms that dwelled there 300 years ago. Today a winery perches benignly on the shoulders of this great rock: Havana Hills.

Klein Gustrouw, Stellenbosch

110 years ago, a wise father divided his farm between two sons. He literally drew a line from the Jonkershoek valley road, through the middle of a Cape Dutch homestead and right up to the top of the hill. Klein Gustrouw is one of the eccentric halves - and is home to the wine of the same name and to owners Chris and Athalie McDonald. Fiona McDonald reports on this unconventional estate.
