Darling is situated an hour's drive from Cape Town up the West Coast. The town was founded on the farm Langfontein in 1853 and is named after Charles Henry Darling who was Lieutenant Governor of the Cape under British occupation.

Bottelary is one of seven wards that the intensively farmed district of Stellenbosch is divided into and it is located to the north-west of the town. The name 'Bottelary' probably stems from the Dutch word bottelarj which was used for a storeroom or cellar housing bottles.
