Drinking and driving: the solution, Cape Town

Arrive alive ... speed kills ... friends don't let friends drive drunk. All of these slogans have been used in ad campaigns alerting motorists to the dangers of reckless and dangerous driving, particularly where alcohol is a factor.

New Zealand: Marlborough, new zealand

The overwhelming success of New Zealand's wine in the past decade or two has been driven almost exclusively by the quality reputation of Sauvignon Blanc. Just over 50% of all wine exported from New Zealand is Sauvignon Blanc. In the past three to four years, critical acclaim for Kiwi Pinot Noir has also been growing - but the automatic association between wine and the land of the long white cloud is Sauvignon Blanc.

New Zealand

New Zealand is a relative newcomer to the global wine scene with winemaking having only really taken off in the past two decades. Grapes have been planted in certain northerly areas since as far back as the early 1800s but with little success.

Cork producers get their act together, Portugal

Upon my arrival at Lisbon airport, Carlos de Jesus, marketing and communications director of cork manufacturing company Amorim, flings his arms around me in greeting. After years of seeking to deny or minimise the problems associated with their products, the cork makers are finally addressing the issue. I have been invited
to review Amorim's operations in Portugal, and De Jesus wastes no time in attempting to win me over.

White blends explored

She admitted to being completely bewildered at the vast selection of wines on display at her local supermarket. "I don't know what Bordeaux is so I usually just grab a bottle of New World Sauvignon Blanc or Cab," she shrugged.

Wine in Parliment

Democratic Alliance MP from KwaZulu-Natal, Mike Ellis, a parliamentary veteran of 17 years, saw it all: all the transitions Parliament made as it moved from the era of PW Botha to that of FW de Klerk to democracy under Nelson Mandela and now Thabo Mbeki.

Navarre, Spain, Spain

Navarre, the northernmost appellation in Spain, has a rich, varied history and a long, proud winemaking tradition: archaeologists have found evidence of winemaking in 2000-year-old Roman ruins excavated at Funes in the south of Navarre.

Decanting: Tim James

To breathe or not to breathe, that is the question... Tim James CWM searches for elusive answers in the great decanting debate.
