Casta Diva's Charisma

Pretoria gourmands wept bitter tears when Marco and Roétte Balmelli closed their multi-award winning restaurant, La Perla, in late 2006. In a city where restaurants tend towards overblown opulence, the Balmellis were unusual in that they offered understated, clean culinary lines and unobtrusive service elegance. Over several decades La Perla had become an über stylish Pretoria institution. Needless to say they were much missed.

Dish

The Gateway area needs a top-notch restaurant, and Three City's exec chef Shaun Munro has answered this call with DISH - an upmarket yet comfortable affair. Mahogany, glass and ivory damask tablecloths set the scene. Service is sharp, and you can watch the chefs in action in the open kitchen.

Empire Cafe

Simple Simon… Simon says… You wouldn't expect my surname to be a tricky one, but from Saaiman to Fymin I've had more than my fair share of variations over the years - and there seems to be even more confusion when I make a restaurant booking. Invariably the man in my life is warmly welcomed on a first-name basis (never mind that it's not his name), and then "Simon" and all too often "the lady" are taken to our table.

Mont Rochelle

The visit didn't start well. I couldn't seem to persuade the staff that I'd actually booked a lunch for four at their restaurant. They kept trying to persuade me that I'd actually reserved place at Mange Tout - the hotel's fine dining restaurant.
