were asked to submit wine from organically
grown grapes, a condition of entry being
that submissions be accompanied by valid
certification, such as that issued by the
Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS).

Classique (MCC) is the South African term
to describe sparkling wines made by undergoing
a secondary fermentation in bottle,
the method traditionally associated with
the Champagne region in France.
When it comes to
Shiraz, two broad styles can be discerned,
the first the overtly aromatic, medium
bodied, but densely structured wines typical
of France’s Rhône and the second being the
darkly coloured, full-fruited wines made
according to South Australia’s Barossa
Valley template.
All is revealed... During judging of this year’s WINE magazine Shiraz Challenge, two very different wines emerged as frontrunners for overall honours resulting in a massive debate amongst panel members as to which was most worthy. Here are the two wines.
The Bordeaux
region in the southwest of France is famous
for its red blends, the best of which have
the ability to mature with benefit with years
of bottle ageing. The two grape varieties
that feature most prominently are austere
Cabernet Sauvignon and fleshy Merlot,
although Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit
Verdot also play a role.
Though Natural Sweet, Noble Late Harvest and Vin de Paille
(straw wine) are all styles of sweet wine, their respective methods of production differ significantly.
