Twin pickings

TWIN PICKINGS
Twin sisters Jesse and Jamie Friedberg packed in their UCT studies to open a Cape Town CBD venue, Skinny Legs & All.

Why it’s billed as a luxury café is unclear – minimalist decor and a small menu reigns here. But there is a steady weekday following in Loop Street for “simple food we like eating ourselves,” according to Jamie. Jamie cooks and Jesse serves all-day breakfast plus lunch and tea options.

Dishes are attractively presented and have a creatively healthy spin, so scones might include dates; and toasted banana loaf is unusually partnered with aniseed-spiked crème fraîche and nuts. Most sauces, spreads and cakes are prepared on-site. Expect French toast breakfast stacks to include celeriac and porcini soup with sourdough toast. Open sandwiches with nonstandard fillings, risotto, Moroccan-style meatballs and wild-mushroom-and-rice parcels are other offerings.

As the venue is unlicensed, try out home-made cordials or zesty lemonade. Skinny Legs & All, 70 Loop Street, Cape Town; tel 021 423 5403
