The VinOair from Corkpops
ELEGANT AND WELL-PRICED
The VinOair from Corkpops is the latest utensil promoting the decantwhileyoupour initiative. It is not the first of its kind that we have tested, and like with the previous, similar gadgets, we are not completely convinced. In design it resembles a Perspex flute that, thanks to a soft rubber stopper, fits snugly into the neck of most bottles, creating an airtight seal. Wine is then channelled via a dualair chamber to an airflow chamber which creates a vacuum effect to draw in more air.
The idea informing the design is easy enough to understand: wines, especially young wines, benefit from aeration, which releases secondary aromas – that is why we swirl wine in our glass before tasting it.
During testing we poured wine through the VinOair and poured a control glass without the use of the gadget. After numerous tests the conclusion had to be made that the aromatic improvement in wine that had been channelled through the gadget was slight and only barely detectable. That said, the VinOair has other benefits apart from being an aerator as it serves as quite an elegant pourer and dripstopper.
At R169 per unit it is definitely the less expensive of the bottleneck aerators too. For details, email louise@liveandgive.co.za or go to www.vinoair.com
