The Riedel Sommelier Burgundy glass

Published: 20 May 11

A GLASS AND A HALF

The Sommelier Burgundy glass was described by Decanter magazine as, “The finest Burgundy glass of all time, suitable for both young and old Burgundies.” And we can see why. Handmade and close to the height of a Burgundy bottle, the large bowl captures the nuances of the wine’s aroma, allowing the bouquet to develop. The flared top lip maximises the fruit flavours by directing a precise flow onto the front palate. Costing just short of R800 per glass, this is one you may want to keep out of the kids’ reach.

A more pocket-friendly option is the Vinum Burgundy glass (also featured on this month’s cover). Like the Sommelier glass, it’s for full-bodied red wines with high acidity and moderate tannin. The Riedel Sommelier Burgundy glass retails for R795 and the Vinum Burgundy glass for R275. Go to www.riedel.co.za.
