Orange Grove is the traditional heartland of Italian Johannesburg. Younger, more assimilated types have moved up and out to Sandton and beyond but the culinary core of the community lingers in the old neighbourhood. The suburb has definitely seen better days – taxis hoot and roar up and down outside the eatery on their way to and from
Alexandra township – but Franco Pisapia makes marinated artichoke and Parma ham sandwiches which will have delicious olive oil dribbling down your chin with pleasure. The pizza slices are Piazza Nuovona perfect. Thursday is gnocchi and ravioli day, when old ladies will fight you off with their sticks to catch the attention of the chef.
