Stellenbosch winery Kanonkop

Go big or go home

Stellenbosch winery Kanonkop has launched a new ultra-premium Pinotage in an effort to kick-start the secondary wine market in South Africa.

The Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage 2006 is made from vines planted on the property in 1953 and saw 16 months in 100% new French oak. Only 1 000 bottles are to be put on the market, initially priced at R1 000 per bottle.

Each wine is individually numbered and labelled with a hologram to ensure authenticity, with buyers limited to purchasing 36 bottles per person.

Kanonkop owner Johann Krige explains that negociants Wade Bales Wine Society and Cybercellar have been appointed to be involved in the project, controlling the supply and demand, which means they will be able to buy back stock from willing sellers to sell on to parties prepared to pay a higher price.

The first tranche of 600 bottles released in January sold out in a matter of days while the next tranche of 400 bottles is set to be released shortly once the market has determined the value of the wines. For more information, see www.wadebales.com or www.cybercellar.com.
