Spier Nature Friendly Sauvignon Blanc 2010
SPIER WINE FARM on the outskirts of Stellenbosch is quite vocal about it embracing sustainable environmental practices, so it is little surprise that the farm has released a “nature-friendly Sauvignon Blanc”. But not all that is nature-friendly is necessarily packaged as such – think of organically grown, farming-for-the-future vegetables that come packaged in synthetic, non-recyclables, for example. It rather defies the purpose of the exercise. With this label design Spier indicates that they don’t turn ‘farming for the future’ into an oxymoron. The label on the Spier Nature Friendly Sauvignon Blanc 2010 is printed on 100% recycled, uncoated paper printed with 100% environmentally friendly inks. This wrap-around, intriguing label encourages imbibers to “remove the label to recycle” – with an easy tear-off section that allows them to do so. Some finer details on the bottle on closer inspection (wax and cork and no plastic) indicate a solid, trustworthy brand that really put words to action.
