What was the first bottle of wine that all made sense and why?
As a young, poor student I went on diving trips in Mozambique with my buddies. We took as little as possible with us but we had to take wine: a two-litre can of Autumn Harvest Coral. There was enough to keep us busy for a few days, it was a sexy colour, the name seemed to be fitting for a diving trip and it had a good kick. It all made sense - then.

What was your most embarrassing moment to do with wine?
During a holiday in Poland, my wife and I visited the small beautiful town of Wroclaw. We were referred to a specialist wine shop with a small restaurant attached. They had a fine international wine collection - but the only product on display under "South Africa" was a well known brand of box wine. It was an insult.

Your greatest extravagance?
Wine.

What was your most memorable wine experience?
On a television assignment to Chile, we visited the Undurraga farm near Santiago. It was a family enterprise with a history of more than 100 years. It was not as spectacular as some Cape wine farms nor was the wine necessarily better. The magic was the social encounter with the owner. At the time he must have been deep in his seventies but he had such a zest for life, he was so positive, humorous and had such passion and compassion.

What wine that you have not yet tasted do you most want to?
I have limited knowledge and experience of Californian wines. A wine tour to the region to taste and experience various wines would be special.

What was the last wine that you bought?
A small bottle of French Chardonnay at the Paris Airport. It was reasonable, but the price not.

What are your favourite restaurants in South Africa?
Doppio Zero in Greenside, Johannesburg for service, quality and good prices, Cranks in Rosebank for originality and good service, Balducci's in the V&A Waterfront for the view.

Which three people would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?
Juliette Binoche (to appreciate her unpretentious beauty), Alan Greenspan (where did it all go wrong?), Hendrik Verwoerd (to inform him about the consequences of his policies).

What is your current state of mind?
Optimistic about the country, dedicated to make a difference.

What is your most treasured possession?
The will to persevere.

Who are your favourite writers?
N.P. van Wyk Louw, Pablo Neruda, Etienne van Heerden.

Who are your favourite musicians?
Leonard Cohen, Sting, Koos du Plessis, Mozart, Pachebel, Ana Nebtrebko.

Where did you spend your last holiday?
In France - a quick stop in Paris, Carcassonne and then boating down the Midi Canal.

What is your favourite city in the world and why?
Must be Paris - the style, beauty, charm and art.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Reciprocal passionate love.
