Soulful musings from Moreira Chonguica

Published: 26 Aug 10

Moreira Chonguica

Jazz musician Moreira Chonguica's latest album alludes to the international language of music and, in The Moreira Project - Vol 2 Citizen of the World, he investigates traditional music from different parts of the world with various other artists. For this soulful saxophonist, stomping grapes left a lasting impression. By Jeanri-Tine van Zyl.

What was the first bottle of wine that made sense and why?
Château Libertas, which I drank at university because it was affordable and we could also mix it to make Sangria.

What was your most memorable wine experience?
Stomping grapes at Beaumont Wine Estate - so much fun!

How big is your wine collection and where do you store it?
I have about 150 bottles, which are stored all over the house.

Which are your favourite South African wine producers?
Beaumont Wine Estate, Haute Cabrière, Graham Beck and Grande Provence.

What was your most embarrassing moment to do with wine?
I have not ever had one. If I am unsure of what to order, I rather go with something I recognise and enjoy - saves me the embarrassment.

What do you like least about wine?
Nothing, I simply adore the stuff !

What is your favourite meal?
I do not have a favourite meal per se - I merely enjoy a home- or well-cooked meal. I am not a fan of junk food.

What are your favourite restaurants in South Africa?
Caveau Wine Bar & Deli, Aubergine and Haiku, all in Cape Town.

What is your most treasured possession?
My saxophones.

What is your greatest extravagance?
Again, definitely my saxophones - they are so expensive!

Who are your favourite musicians?
I have so many favourites due to my love for the different styles of music. To mention a few, James Brown, Manu Dibango, Najee, Joshua Redman, João Bosco, John Coltrane... the list is endless.

Where did you spend your last holiday?
I haven't taken a holiday in ages, but when I'm invited to places like Rio de Janeiro or Zanzibar on business, I make sure to take a few extra days to relax and enjoy the surroundings and scenery.

What is your favourite city in the world and why?
Most definitely Cape Town because it is my home. I would then say Maputo because that's where my family live. Lastly, Rio de Janeiro because that's where the rhythm is.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Freedom of spirit. Perfect happiness is relevant to the specific moment and situation.
