Subtitled “The House of Monty”, this eatery is a successor to Monty Moodley’s late lamented Chelsea restaurant in the CBD. No one is going to win any décor awards here but loyal customers flock to savour the Durban style curries. So much so that on busy days packed tables spill out into the adjoining parking lot. Everything on the menu pays tribute to the cuisine of the South Indian indentured labourers who came to KZN to work in the cane fields and who modified their culinary styles to suit their new environment. There are dishes that, while common in a domestic setting, have seldom been seen on a restaurant menu before – the delicious trotter curry with tomato chutney is not to be missed. Crab curry, masala fried fish and chicken biryani can all be given a truly Durban dining flavour by being stuffed into a bunny chow base. Despite the disappointing desserts, this restaurant is a national cultural treasure to be savoured with pride
