Seeing red

Published: 03 Sep 02

Villiera has had a problem supplying sufficient quantities of their red wines over the years.

When the Grier family bought the Stellenbosch property in the early ’80s it was planted mainly to white varieties. “The few reds we produced were regular award winners but due to small quantities and good demand, availability was always a problem,” winemaker Jeff Grier said.

Additional landholdings and more plantings of red grapes has rectified this and Villiera is now able to satisfy demand for their red wines as well.

Consistent performers have been the flagship Cru Monro Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend; Merlot and Merlot Reserve and Pinotage.

The energetic Villiera team have now added the Down to Earth blend – an easy-drinking combination of Shiraz, Carignan, Gamay Noir, Merlot and Pinotage – to the fold.
