SA features on World’s 50 Best Restaurants
The results of S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants were announced on Monday night, with somewhat disappointing news for South African foodies – just one SA restaurant managed to crack the much-coveted list.
Le Quartier Francais, in 36th place, was the sole South African restaurant to make it into the illustrious top 50. Although down five places from 2010, this is the seventh year running that the Franschhoek-based restaurant, led by chef Margot Janse, has appeared the top 50 and it was also voted the Best Restaurant In The Middle East and Africa (an acclaimed title that was previously held by La Colombe).
Rust en Vrede, placed 61st, was the only restaurant to move up in the rankings – 13 places, from 74th in 2010 – while Constantia Uitsig’s La Colombe fell a whopping 70 places to 82. (For the full listing of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, click here.)
With chef David Higgs reportedly packing his bags and heading to the big city lights of Joburg, all eyes will be on Rust en Vrede to see whether it can maintain its current good form. Meanwhile, one would imagine that La Colombe is scrambling to make the necessary changes to reinstate itself as the number one restaurant in the Middle East and Africa.
Can La Colombe return to its former glory?
