Pizza and more

Published: 01 Nov 10

Family-owned Mario’s Italian restaurant was forced to close two matches into the FIFA World Cup’s eight Cape Town soccer events. It lost any chance of bumper profits after a disastrous fire at their prime Green Point location.

The Italian restaurant has operated since 1975, with Pina Marzagalli now assisted by her children Maralena and Marco. Mario’s reopened in September with fresh paint and a new brick pizza oven. Pizzas follow Italian traditions by going easy on tomato sauce, mozzarella and toppings on a thin, crispy base.

They range from garlic and herb-laced foccaccia to classic regina, napoletana and prosciutto. Previous menu old-timers still feature, such as ravioli in sage and butter to slow-roasted oxtail, kidneys and sweetbread signatures. Call 021 439 6644.
