Overberg and Cape Agulhas wine regions

Published: 11 Feb 09

In the Elgin ward along the N2 from Grabouw (home to the Oude Molen brandy cellar) to Houwhoek, wine farming has become second only to apple farming, and the number of producers continues to mount. First there was Paul Cluver; now one also speaks about Arumdale, Belfield, Catherine Marshall, Elgin Vintners and Highlands Road, Iona and Oak Valley, Ross Gower and South Hill.

Raka and Boschrivier are up the road from Springfontein and Stanford, and further north around Greyton are Lismore, Oewerzicht and Andy Mitchell – Lismore and Goedvertrouw (north of Bot River) counting as the only registered estates in the Overberg besides Elgin’s Paul Cluver.

The Cape Agulhas district stretches north-east beyond Napier, Bredasdorp and Arniston towards the district of Swellendam, but it’s west of Bredasdorp and south of Elim that Strandveld, Black Oystercatcher and Zoetendal are attracting attention.
