Oliva on Illovo’s Oxford Road

Published: 26 Apr 11

IN TUNE WITH TAPAS

Oliva recently opened on Illovo’s Oxford Road strip and offers delicious tapas and Mediterranean fare. Zane Beer, who many fondly know from his days at Fino in Parktown North, has a passion for Spanish culture, food and drink. He has carefully created a space that has the look and feel of a cozy tapas bar. The restaurant spills out onto the pavement and has a casual, buzzy atmosphere that draws people in and encourages a long, relaxed dining experience. The menu has a strong Spanish influence but also incorporates Mediterranean dishes to add variety. Zane is eager to introduce diners to some classic dishes such as arancini (rice balls with stuffing), Italian cured cold meats like bresaola, sausages like Luganica and Italian and Spanish cheeses.

The restaurant is in the process of becoming licensed and the wine list is sure to be another reason to visit Oliva. Sherries will also feature strongly on the list and Zane is determined to offer an excellent selection and be on hand to run through the various types and styles. (For more tapas restaurants, turn to page 66.)
