The Results

The Trophy Wine Show seeks to recognise excellence in the South African wine industry. Wealth management company Old Mutual has sponsored the competition since its inception in 2002 on the basis that it sees value in collaborating with a process that discovers the country's top wines and producers and that makes this information available to the wine drinking public.

 

WHO RUNS IT

The competition is convened by leading wine critic Michael Fridjhon in conjunction with WINE magazine. JUDGES AT THE 2009 TROPHY WINE SHOW International judges: Michel Bettane (France's leading wine critic), Brian Croser (leading Australian winemaker) and Julia Harding MW (writer and editor for www.jancisrobinson.com and assistant editor of The Oxford Companion to Wine). South African judges: Carrie Adams (wine buyer and coowner of Norman Goodfellows), Ginette de Fleuriot CWM (national retail sales manager for Wine Worx), Christian Eedes (editor of WINE magazine), Gary Jordan (proprietor and winemaker, Jordan), Angela Lloyd (wine writer and wine judge) and James Pietersen (wine judge).

HOW IT WORKS

Panels comprising three senior judges - and including one international representative per panel - taste and score the submissions in each class using Riedel glasses.

In addition, associate judges for the Show are selected from South Africa's new-generation winemakers and writers. A different associate judge sits with each panel on each of the medal-judging days of the Show. They participate in the tasting and the post-judging discussion though their scores are not taken into account in the final tally. Their involvement provides an essential training platform for the country's wine judges of the future.

By means of the 100-point scoring system, panels produce a consensus-driven result where wines scoring 90 and over win gold medals, 80 to 89 silver medals and 70 to 79 bronze medals. The gold-medal wines in each class go through to the trophy judging where all of the panellists re-assess them from freshly opened bottles. The competition results are audited by chartered accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers.

THE RESULTS

With the market for wine hugely overtraded, an essential objective of the Trophy Wine Show is to assist the consumer make a more informed purchase decision. Towards this end, full results are provided over the following pages, with wines listed by award (trophy and gold, silver and bronze) and, within this, according to category. Within each category, wines appear in order of ascending price. All prices quoted are ex-cellar (unless otherwise stipulated), provided for guideline purposes only.
