Nuance Wine Finer

Nuance Wine Finer

The decant-while-you-pour-idea is one that is imitated in many devices and yet, few succeed in delivering convincing results. Whether you are swirling the wine in your glass or pouring it through an elegant "beak" really does not make a huge difference.

But there is something to say in favour of elegant presentation of wine, and that is very much the philosophy behind the Nuance Wine Finer. It took designer Marcus Vagnby two and a half years to develop this product with the primary goal to avoid finings and pieces of cork ending up in your glass of red wine. This although Danish company Nuance also highlights the product's other "appeals". "Aeration. Drip stop. Close-fitting lid."

A rather intricate looking device, the Nuance Wine Finer at first glance resembles a flute - it has a broad tip which narrows towards the bottom with 32 holes in the 12 cm rubber covered "pipe". Removing the lid at the tip, the stainless steel filter that lies inside and through which the liquid is sieved, can be seen. The narrow base fits into the bottle neck, breaking the surface of the wine. When wine is poured, some liquid makes its way through a minute opening at the base, with the wine also being filtered through the 32 holes. Drawing in air as you pour, a bubbling noise is heard, with flow initially being hampered a bit.

The Wine Finer was tested on red wines from various vintages and delivered well on its primary goal of filtering sediment, while it also proved to aerate wine successfully. Compared to the control glass of wine, it did improve the nose, with more secondary aromas coming to the fore. Upon standing, though, both glasses opened up equally, developing the same bouquet and taste profile. This should however not discredit the Nuance Wine Finer, as this device might not deliver definitively better results, but it is instantaneous. Then again, when drinking wine, who is in a rush?

The Nuance Wine Finer is available from Yuppiechef and retails for R490. Tel 021 702 4969, or visit
