New Il Cappero

The décor and Barrack Street location may be modest, but the cooking appears to be solid. New Il Cappero restaurant in Cape Town’s CBD offers a buffet table of roasted peppers and involtini di melanzane to vitello tonnato for office workers at lunchtime, with à la carte options during the evenings. Roman-born Aldo Bezzicheri and his Sicilian wife Romano are behind the Sicilian-influenced menu of antipasti, pasta, fish and meats. Scout out characteristic elements such as fishballs in tomato sauce, the caper-infused Sicilian potatoes or the aubergine and tomato pasta Norma sprinkled with salted, dried ricotta. The couple are giving Cape Town a go after years of spreading the duties as onboard chef and captain respectively on luxury yachts. Now she cooks and he serves. “If I go behind in the kitchen, be many problems,” shrugs Aldo of the happy arrangement.

3 Barrack Street, Cape Town; tel 021 461 3168.
