New garagiste winery

Published: 27 Jul 03

The Foundry is a wine partnership established in 2000 by Chris Williams, winemaker at Delaire, and James Reid, general manager of Western Wines for South Africa. Its aim is to produce small quantities of superb wines that will reflect the best of what South Africa is capable of producing.

It recently achieved recognition in the form of a silver medal (for its maiden 2001 Syrah) and a bronze (for the Double-Barrel blend) at the Fairbairn Capital Trophy Wine Show 2003.

One of the international judges involved in the competition, Jancis Robinson, subsequently went on to cite The Foundry Syrah 2001 as among her favourite South African wines in a recent Financial Times wine column. On her website she lists The Foundry as a “South African newcomer to watch” and describes the Syrah 2001 and “fascinating” Double-Barrel 2001 blend of Tinta Barocca with Cabernet Sauvignon as two of the finest reds she tasted during her recent visit.

The wines are made at Delaire winery in Stellenbosch and will be released at the beginning of August.
