NEDBANK GREEN WINE AWARDS
The inaugural Nedbank Green Wine Awards were held at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Gardens, Cape Town, on 11 November 2009.
Rudi Liebenberg, chef de cuisine at the Cape Colony Restaurant, came up with a delicious menu to complement the winning organic wines.
First up was a seafood ceviche with paw paw salsa, served with the winning white wine, Lazanou Organic Vineyards Chenin Blanc 2008, which was rated 4 Stars.
The best red wine, Laibach The Ladybird 2007, also rated 4 Stars, was served with the main course: spinachstuffed lamb loin accompanied by potato and butternut pavé and a bean salad.
Elgin estate Oak Valley scooped the Best Environmental Practices Award, winning an IPW (Integrated Production of Wine) audit worth R11 000 provided by Enviroscientific for both farm and cellar towards EnviroWines certification.
MD Anthony Rawbone-Viljoen said: "The environment and excellence are subjects we are very serious about at Oak Valley and it's very pleasing to see our efforts in this regard recognised by Nedbank and WINE magazine."
In keeping with the green theme, guests were given saplings of Erythrina caffra, an indigenous deciduous tree, donated by Just Trees.
