None of the eateries in the moyo chain are authentic African in flavour but they can be entertaining if you accept them on their own terms. Décor has a mythical, lost civilization feel, with elaborate copper work complimented by live music from across the continent. The music is much better than the food, which is glorified steakhouse with a veneer of boerekos and pseudo-North African flavour. Key African culinary terms like ‘yassa’ are used incorrectly. But somehow when you are in the space none of this matters – it’s fun and the portions are hearty. Some find the Afro-Disney quality offensive, but the Melrose Arch eatery is surprisingly glamorous at night and the zoolake branch is great for kids.
