Morgenster White Truffle Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Published: 21 Feb 11

LITTLE LUXURIES

At roughly R25 000 for one kilogram, truffles are a true delicacy that few are able to afford. Shrouded in mystery since the Middle Ages when it was believed that truffles were a manifestation of the devil, today they are gathered with the assistance of a sniffer pig or dog that can detect their presence, growing spontaneously where the fungal spores encounter the rootlets of an oak tree.

If you can’t afford the high prices demanded for this fungi, one way of getting the earthy truffle flavour in your mashed potatoes, salad dressings, soups or pastas is to make use of olive oil infused with the black or white delicacies. To produce white truffle-enhanced oil, Morgenster imports white truffle concentrate from Piedmont, Italy, and blends it with extravirgin olive oil.

Buy a 100ml bottle at Morgenster wine estate in Somerset West for R160.50 or order on www.morgenster.co.za. Tel 021 852 1738
