Mon Ami restaurant
Come eat, my friends
Being greeted as Mon Ami immediately makes you feel welcome. Tiaan Els operates the slick Craighall Park venue where new recruit Cindy de Chaves punts French elements with an eclectic twist. Lunch on the suave pavement terrace includes prepared burgers, salads and pasta.
Long drapes and low lamps alongside the Champagne bar herald a dinner menu ranging from salmon spring rolls or signature melted Camembert sandwich to tuna with black rice or Chinese chicken and nougat cheesecake.
Out in the garden, take high tea near an art gallery. Expect boutique wines, MCCs and Champagnes, or try the tequila exploration menu.
If you have a tipple too many, Els may even drive you home in his 1961 limousine Jag. Tel 011 447 4648, www.ami-restaurant.co.za.

The professional watering staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The choices of wine or champagne are endless and one doesn’t know what to choose from. We took the Alkmaar Blend, which is extremely rare and surprisingly at very good price.
I can highly recommend the Camembert sandwich as a starter with nectarine and roasted almonds melted into the Camembert. It was an explosion of flavours ! The Lamb shank for main was so softly cooked that the meat fell off the bone. Let’s not forget the fantastic vegetables sauce and a mash spring roll. as for the nougat cheesecake all I can say is WOW WOW WOW !
We eat out basically every night but never before came upon a place with such a great ambiance, extraordinary food and great people. I can highly recommend this glamorous hidden away spot.

Jaen Smith
