Chef-patron Ciro Molinaro has three-star Michelin experience in the Loire Valley, France, and after nearly 30 years in Johannesburg he is something of a local culinary legend. His elegant bistro has become the essential haunt of the northern suburbs ‘yummy mummies’ and is a great place for spotting designer handbags at play. Chef Ciro says that he specialises in “taste bud manipulation and stimulation” and this ethos is evident in the menu – butternut rösti topped with roasted pears and sliced tongue compete for attention with sumac-crusted duck, mint-infused calamari and Camembert and rhubarb pancakes. On a good day this all makes for a wonderful experience, but the service is erratic and when a customer complains the boss has been known to move beyond a lack of interest into a manner that borders on rudeness.
