Corné Krige

Former Springbok captain and ex Stormers and Western Province flanker Corné Krige, with 39 international test caps, is one of SA's best-known rugby stars - who also happens to have a passion for wine. By Emma Odendaal.

 

What was the first bottle of wine that all made sense and why?
A bottle of Beyerskloof Pinotage because Beyers Truter was telling me what I should be trying to smell and taste.

What was your most memorable wine experience?
Travelling around Burgundy tasting wine with my wife and Tiaan Strauss' wife.

What wine that you have not yet tasted do you most want to?
Château Pétrus (my middle name is Petrus).

What was the last wine that you bought?
Ken Forrester Shiraz Grenache.

How big is your wine collection and where do you store it?
About 50 bottles with many magnums - the biggest bottle I own is 18 litres! - all stored in a cool cupboard in my garage.

Which are your favourite South African wine producers?
Kanonkop, Beyerskloof, Ken Forrester, Du Preez and Diemersfontein (in no specific order).

What was your most embarrassing moment to do with wine?
Every time I had too much wine!

What do you like least about wine?
The headache it gives you.

What is your favourite meal?
Kudu fillet and chips.

What are your favourite restaurants in South Africa?
Carné, Wakame and Bukhara.

Which three people would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?
Nelson Mandela, Penelope Cruz and Nico Nel.

What is your most treasured possession?
My family.

What is your greatest extravagance?
My Apple iPad.

How do you relax?
I love the bush, so walking in the bush with a rifle is my best form of relaxation.

Who are your favourite writers?
Malcolm Gladwell and Robin Sharma.

Who are your favourite musicians?
Third Day, Laurika Rauch and U2.

Where did you spend your last holiday?
The Royal Livingstone Hotel in Zambia.

What is your favourite city in the world and why?
Cape Town as there is so much to do.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
