Kanonkop releases 3rd vintage of Black Label Pinotage
Kanonkop wine farm in Stellenbosch released its third vintage of the anticipated Black Label Pinotage this week. Termed as South Africa’s “most sought-after wine” the Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage made headlines in 2009 when a 1000 bottles of the 2006 vintage were released with a price tag of R1000 each. This year, the 2008 vintage was again only made available in limited quantities – only 1200 bottles will be sold through three Cape-based wine negotiants at R1 100 per bottle, inclusive of VAT.
The wine is made exclusively from a small patch of Pinotage vines planted in 1953. According to Kanonkop proprietor Johann Krige the idea was to make “the ultimate Kanonkop wine. This had to be Pinotage, on which the Estate’s foundation was laid and a large amount of its recognition was founded.”
A vertical tasting of the first three vintages of these premium wines indicated a big, voluptuous wine style that is Bordeaux rather than Burgundian in character, a style that cellar master Abrie Beeslaar says will reward the punter after some 20 years of cellaring.
Each wine is individually numbered and labelled with a hologram to ensure authenticity.
The wines are exclusively available from the following outlets: The Wine Cellar, the Wade Bales Wine Society and Cybercellar.
