Harvey's gets a makeover
The beach strip along Sea Point has a surprisingly small number of restaurants and bars for its scenic location, looking out over the promenade towards the Atlantic. But, along this stretch of beachfront is Winchester Mansions, a familiar façade since the 1920s when the current family owners decided that staying in sunny Cape Town was a far better option that returning to Britain.
The outside of the building harks back to a bygone day, which is perhaps why I've never stopped to venture inside. It's always seemed, well, a bit old-fashioned and somewhat ‘fuddy duddy' compared to the likes of La Perla and Wakame, also along this Mouille Point-Sea Point strip.
But, as I've learnt, looks can be deceiving. Harvey's, Winchester Mansion's bar, has had a makeover, and its new party dress is chic and über-trendy. Bronzed mirrors and plush create an elegant atmosphere in luxurious blacks, silver and gold. Outside, the tables looking out over the promenade are still as enticing as before. The atmosphere created is fashionable and stylish, yet it somehow still feels comfortable and relaxed.
There are apparently TVs available for major sporting events, but I was more interested in the flaring barmen, who are not just for show - they create mean cocktails too. Try the Harvey's Passionade, Harvey's signature cocktail consisting of passion fruit puree and Malibu rum topped with Pierre Jourdan Brut.
Snacks available include pizzas, club sandwiches and spring rolls.
