One of the most exciting wines we've come across recently is the Sijnn 2007, a blend of 42% Shiraz, 26% Mourvèdre, 21% Touriga Nacional, 10% Trincadeira and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wine comes from vineyards near Malgas on the Breede River (originally called Sijnn by the Khoisan) and partners in the venture include David Trafford of De Trafford Wines in Stellenbosch as well as Simon Farr, founder of UK wine merchant Bibendum.
Broken slate reminiscent of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in France and Priorat in Spain predominates, hence the decision to plant mainly southern European varieties.
The blend is available from De Trafford at R150 a bottle while other wines include the Mourvèdre 2007, Trincadeira 2007 and Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 (R100 a bottle each).
