Gautrain ups eating ante

Published: 01 Sep 11

Joburgers moaning that Cape Town restaurants always bag top chefs will be pleased to see David Higgs heading the new Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel. The award-winning chef is enjoying Joburg’s frenetic pace and a bustling Sandton workplace, in contrast to Rust en Vrede restaurant’s fine-dining fare and the tranquil wineland space he left. Since mid-August, diners have experienced a Higgs touch in the revamped Central One Bar & Restaurant, where a DJ spins every night and a baby grand’s gentle melodies linger over breakfast.

The Central One concept is food, relaxation and music, perfectly pitched to service Jozi’s after-work crowd and hotel regulars. Expect funky bar snacks partnering innovative cocktails. Those lingering for dinner can expect “modern comfort food that draws on brasserie standards, using fresh presentation and a few surprises on the plate”, according to Higgs.

Think along the lines of brandade of haddock with sauce gribiche or Parmesan fondue with classic potato chips. Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel, corner of Rivonia Road and West Street, Sandton, tel 011 245 8000
