Gastropubs come to Joburg

Published: 01 Jan 11

Illovo has a new and exciting addition to its restaurant scene. Rabbit in the Moon is the sister restaurant to the much acclaimed New York Gastropub that opened earlier in the year. The mix of excellent food, good wine, unusual cocktails and great music is sure to make this the hottest place to be seen in Joburg. The owners of this new project describe the restaurant as a unique haute bohemian café bar and one look at the menu explains all. The mouthwatering items span all corners of the culinary globe – potatoes with truffle oil, salmon tartare wrapped in black tagliolini with saffron sauce, Chilean ceviche, cheese and charcuterie boards and hand-made empanadas, to mention a few.

The creative force behind this eatery is renowned designer Cinzia Spalletti who has worked with the likes of Georgio Armani and Versace, as well as being recognised as a world-class interior designer. Her skilled eye for design has transformed this space and the outside Tudor-style tent into an eclectic but sophisticated restaurant that begs to be explored. Rabbit in the Moon, 198 Oxford Road, Illovo, Johannesburg; tel 011 447 6720

" My girlfriend and I went for lunch last week and were blown away with how great the burgers were. Unfortunately we didn't try anything else but we will definitely be returning soon to check out the rest of the menu. Service wasn't amazing but we really liked the look and feel of the place. Would definitely recommend it. "
