Of the Garden Route’s many treats, this is the one that makes cheese fanatics shiver with pleasure. Alje van Deemder, microbiologist and prize-winning cheese-maker, handcrafts goats and cows milk cheese – his Formosa goats milk cheese in ash and Gruyère won prizes at the 2007 World Cheese Awards in London. Lunch consists of straight-from-the-oven crusty bread, a pile of cheeses and a selection of salads made from Alje’s garden bounty. Whether you savour the soft mozzarella, creamy thyme-laden chevin or the well-matured sweet milk, textured with cumin seeds, you really can’t go wrong. Along with lunch, your host, the affable cheese-maker himself, is happy to fill you in on his fascinating craft. Most of what you eat (including the bread) is available to purchase and take home.

Browns

It's not often you're invited to visit a restaurant's wine cellar as part of the dining experience. Browns of Rivonia, the rambling, country-club style haunt of the well-heeled in flight from Sandton Square, makes a point of it. So much so that the winelist, which tags behind the menu is, to put it kindly, scanty. For more. [click here]
