French connection

Published: 22 Aug 02

Welmoed winemaker Carmen Stevens is furiously learning French in anticipation of her six-week visit in September.

The French consul in South Africa, Mr Bruno Clerc, made the presentation of an airline ticket to France, along with intensive French lessons from the Alliance Francaise, to Stevens as part of their Bastille Day celebrations in July.

Stevens heads off to the Rhône valley to learn more about Shiraz.

Clerc said sending a South African winemaker to France was a practical way of showing his country’s support to the transformation of the South African wine industry.
