Campaign to support less-fortunate dogs

Published: 25 Jan 10

For the love of dogs

Visit a wine farm and chances are you'll encounter a tail-wagging friend trailing its winemaker owner. Much loved, with some even receiving praise on wine labels, dogs are part and parcel of farm life in South Africa. However, not all dogs are lucky enough to live a pampered farm life.

The Stellenbosch Animal Welfare Society hosts numerous less-fortunate dogs and wages an ongoing battle to fund spaying and dipping clinics and other veterinary services. In support of this organisation, some wine producers have thrown their weight behind a sticker campaign, headed by Lorna Hughes of Stonehill Wines.

"The thinking is that wine producers buy [welfare support] stickers for their bottles and the proceeds - a matter of a few cents per bottle - go straight to Animal Welfare," says Hughes. Anyone interested in supporting the campaign is asked to contact her on 073 420 3300.
