FDC Laszlo 2006 launched
You'll be excused for thinking you've stepped onto a Provence movie set when you visit the Food Studio in Braeside Road, Green Point. Run by chef, owner, food writer and Juliette Binoche-lookalike Marlene van der Westhuizen, the venue and vibe is reminiscent of that featured in the movie Chocolat. The only thing missing was Johnny Depp.
This intimate venue (with rustic French interiors and vintage Christian Lacroix lace-design glass bottles et al) was the c'est si bon choice for the launch of the follow-up vintage to Fleur du Cap's Laszlo 2004. The venue is so comfortable, well-known winelands personality Dave Hughes takes off his shoes before entering the premises, revealed Van der Westhuizen while chatting away over a pot stewing something delicious.
Even the wine was introduced like at a lunch with friends - no fuss or fancy talk, just drink and enjoy and let us have your thoughts.
With a skip in vintage (no 2005 was released) the 2006 sees a deviation from the introductory Merlot based blend, instead Cabernet Sauvignon dominates (43%) with Shiraz (18%) supported by Petit Verdot (6%) and Malbec (3%).
"It is a big gutsy wine," according to The Bergkelder cellarmaster Andrea Freeborough. A tribute to Dr Julius Laszlo, cellarmaster at The Bergkelder in the ‘80s, the wine was matured for 28 months in 300ℓ French oak barrels - a size that Dr Laszlo introduced to the South African winemaking industry.
The wine is still young - dark and tight with aromatic hints of what in the future might develop into subtle marzipan undertones. Currently there is a pleasing mint quality on the nose ("an annual characteristic") with brazen tannins on the palate.
When asked about Dr Laszlo, Freeborough reveals that he isn't as involved with the production anymore. At his mature age, his mind too often wanders. When The Bergkelder team presented him with the 2006 blend, he apparently struggled with names, but nevertheless had his wits about him enough to recognise the 2006 vintage of the wine named after him as very fine.
Laszlo 2006 is available from The Bergkelder Vinoteque and exclusive wine outlets from R220 per bottle.
