The Empire Café is so close to Surfer’s Corner that you can taste the salt from the sea. Chef-patron David Jones argues that “lifestyle is more important than money,” and if the waves are good he gives his staff an hour off to go surfing. Décor is backpacker bohemian but Jones previously worked at Constantia Uitsig and was a founder chef at the Olympia Café – his pedigree is evident in dishes such as tuna Niçoise with basil aïoli, bubble filled ciabatta breads and perfect flaky croissants. Loyal customers return repeatedly for the lemon cheesecake. The surroundings might be scruffy but the food is top notch.
