Peter Veldsman and Johan Odendaal never neglect their Afrikaans culinary roots, even while experimenting with ideas garnered from frequent tours of top European and North African tables. Chandeliers and flamboyant plating that incorporates porcupine quills and gold dust are the order of the day. From the quail stuffed with prunes and served with vetkoek and boerewors ravioli, to b’stilla poultry and phylo pies, Africa is celebrated in an ebullient gastronomic manner. Desserts are a strong point – Amarula tart with Ethiopian coffee bean ice cream shows wonderful use of this local liqueur. Loyal customers would riot if the deliciously bitter-sweet spiced orange chocolate marquise was removed from the menu. Utterly idiosyncratic, a love it or hate it venue – no middle ground possible.
