Eat, the name of Chef Arnold Tanzer pop-up restaurant

Published: 01 Jun 11

EAT WITH ARNOLD TANZER

Jozi diners keen on some food mystery should sign up for chef Arnold Tanzer’s foodie evenings. Eat is the name of his pop-up restaurant, where the venue is secret until the day. “Some venues are bakeries or coffee shops or places with historical significance. We pop up for a night or two. We alert our fan club of the date via an email newsletter. They’re only texted the location that morning,” says Tanzer. Although the price per head varies, there is a minimum of five taster courses. As microbreweries and winemaker events are incorporated, there is no BYO. Tanzer’s team usually does the cooking, but guest chefs sometimes feature. Eat events vary from accommodating 30 to 100 people. The focus is on South African cuisine, so expect goat’s cheese from Benoni, free-range pork belly from Heidelberg and SASSI-compliant fish. “Rent kills a lot of Joburg restaurateurs, so for me this is about saying I’ll pop up where I can. Diners are looking for comfort and recognisable food. Eat is also a social moment and the mystery venue means they get into the spirit of it,” says Tanzer. To reserve a seat, search for Arnold Tanzer’s Facebook Eat group, Twitter eatpopup or email arnold@foodonthemove.co.za.
