Eat in or out

Published: 01 Sep 11

The colours are vibrant, the flavours intense. Caterer Carolyn Singer has opened Eat, a quaint coffee shop and deli in Gardens that borders Cape Town’s CBD. The appeal is delicious food freshly prepared to eat in or out. Pop in for a coffee and it’s hard to leave empty-handed.

Numerous sweet and savoury options start with an all-day breakfast and move to a table selection of the day’s fish and meat dishes, quiches and salads, or delicious fresh bakes. Eat isn’t open for dinner but the plethora of bottled deli goods and ready-made meals provide convenient shortcuts for home. Find everything from home-made jars of pesto to sweet or savoury sauces.

Frozen soups, savoury meals and puddings are sold in three sizes, and you’ll find such delights as chilli con carne, tuna lasagne, chocolate mousse and cheesecakes. Singer lets her food do the talking – drop in and there’s a good chance you’ll be offered a taste of rainbow cupcakes, curried orange home-smoked chicken or cherry-flavoured buttermilk rusks. Eat, 31 Breda Street, Gardens, Cape Town, tel 021 461 6678
