Devilishly gorgeous - and that's not just the band

South African band The Parlotones have just embarked on another world tour but they leave local fans well catered for. This week the group's own label wine, Giant Mistake, became available at select Woolworths outlets.

Already acknowledged by high-profile pundits, the wine is proving to be every bit as popular, and in demand, as lead singer Kahn Morbee. At an intimate launch held at the Cape Grace couple of weeks ago, members of the band mingled with guests, glass in hand, bowing to praises for more than just their looks and lyrics.

‘Hands on Wine' is the brain behind the concept, with Allan Mullins (Cape Wine Master from Woolworths) and Pieter Walser (from the Blankbottle fame) providing expert input. Winemakers Hugo Truter and Pieter-Neil Rossouw added their vinous skills to the team. The end result is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), Shiraz (23%), Pinotage (12%) and Cabernet Franc (11%). Walser revealed that every varietal represents a band member. Equating the characteristics of the respective varieties to the strengths of the members' musical contributions, Walser muses about the Pinotage being "the producer that brings it all together". Well, a band can't do without a producer, but maybe the wine could. Pleasant chewy tannins nonetheless, with loads of character on the nose that makes for a beautiful companion when paired with the band's arresting lyrics.

The wine retails for R79. What a bargain.
