De Morgenzon Reserve Chenin Blanc 2009
DE MORGENZON RESERVE CHENIN BLANC 2009
A compelling wine with an intriguing label. De Morgenzon literally means ‘the morning sun’ (the farm is the first part of the Stellenobosch valley in which it is situated to see the morning sun).
This Chenin, produced from 38-year-old low-yielding bushvines, was made specifically for Wendy and Hylton Appelbaum by Teddy Hall, dubbed the ‘Sultan of Chenin’. The label has an old-fashioned appeal and classy charm. It has an Old-World style as if it was handillustrated for a map from a bygone era. Fish eagles, buck, grape bunches, a cheetah stealthily positioned down the side and a view over False Bay perhaps allude to the influence of the sea on this area and elements that stood out when the farm was first founded over 300 years ago. The wine is described as having a flowery mid-palate – certainly a theme that follows through with these caricatures that frame the label, creeping around the edges. Its vintage appeal will, on the shelves, be associated with authenticity.
