No ABC syndrome for Shiraz

As a wine lover you’re no doubt enthusiastic about Shiraz, but as it draws further attention, what does the future actually hold for this variety; locally and as a global player?

Jefferson chocolate cake recipe

Thomas Jefferson is perhaps best known as the third president of the USA, but he was also that country’s founding wine geek, so a cake in his honour is only fitting, writes Anna Trapido.

Private Preserve

A wine, once opened and recorked, can remain in your fridge for one, maybe two days, but anything after that would cause a wine to rapidly expire and give way to oxidation – a process which

SA's most romantic restaurants

Forget the wilted roses and cheesy card. The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and few are the women who won’t go weak at the knees for an intimate dinner. Leigh Robertson and Andrea

Cloof, Darling

WHY? Because Darling offers a different, more rustic kind of winelands charm, and this wine farm and conservation champion is legendary for its gourmet barbecues served in a relaxed country setting. Long tables seating up to 150 can be set up on the sprawling lawn overlooking the plains (or under the stars), but the delightful Cow Shed can comfortably seat up to 120 people while the Tasting Venue can accommodate a cosy 50 guests. Food - whether it's a South African feast with Cape Malay influences and plenty of goodies on the braai or a Moroccan affair - is served platter style and it's all meant to be shared. Ceremonies can take place under the trees, in an enclosed courtyard among the cellar buildings beneath a vine covered pergola or in the tasting room. Only Cloof wines may be consumed (there's a broad selection to suit all budgets), except bubbly, with a corkage fee charged per bottle. The bridal couple can spend the night in the charming self catering cottage at neighbouring Burgerspost Farm.

WE THINK... the stylish Cow Shed is almost reason enough to consider the lesser known Darling area for your venue, and it lends itself to thinking out of the box.
