Mike Clarke is well known in the South African hospitality industry, having previously owned Suikerbossie in Hout Bay and Crabs Creek in Plettenberg Bay. In his latest venture he has scaled down the size of the enterprise but not the skill of the cooking. The Little Karoo breakfast of eggs, sausage, bacon and mushrooms with sour-dough bread toasts is a heart-stopping classic. Lunch-time sees handmade, lean mince burgers with lashings of blue cheese and crisp bacon toppings. Adventurous diners can enjoy local culinary classics such as Karoo oysters – liver wrapped in caul. The oxtail is tender, slow-cooked in red wine and marvellous. Daily specials always include a vegetarian dish.
