CHENIN BLANC AWARDS

WINE magazine announced the results of the 2010 Guala Closures Chenin Blanc Challenge during a luncheon at Jordan Restaurant in Stellenbosch on 14 January 2010.

Scottish chef George Jardine, well known for preparing dishes boasting seasonal produce, came up with a menu that was well matched to the winning wines.

First up was a delicious course of salt and sugar cured trout, sun dried tomato and basil mousse, served with the Best Value Chenin Blanc, Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Bush Vines 2009, which was rated 3½ Stars.

This was followed by black mission fig carpaccio with foie gras Chantilly and Noble Late Harvest jelly, the fresh flavours of which were elegantly matched with the Simonsig 2007, voted best Unwooded Chenin Blanc, also rated 3½ Stars.

The Best Wooded Chenin Blanc, and Best Chenin Blanc Overall, the Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection 2008, provided an excellent counterbalance to the richness of the butter-roasted quail with white pudding and cranberry stuffing and caramelised onion purée.
