Chefs Warehouse: the new 'it' spot for Cape Town foodies

I’ve got one bit of advice for anyone visiting Chefs Warehouse…. Leave your credit card at home.

Opened just a few weeks ago by renowned Irish chef Liam Tomlin, who previously ran the world-famous Blanc restaurant in Sydney, Chefs Warehouse is a one-stop-shop for food lovers and budding cooks.

The front-end of the small, renovated building stocks everything from wooden spoons and gleaming Japanese cleavers to super-sized rolling pins and Le Creuset pots. A room to the back houses fragrant, fresh spices imported teas, 12-year-old balsamic vinegar, among other delicacies. Then there’s the cold room where you’ll find chilled produce like duck and goose fat. Of course there’s also a wide range of wine-related products, including crystal stemware and unusual wine racks. An ever-growing cookbook collection is also on offer, and Liam proudly says that he’ll never stock a Jamie Oliver cookbook. Instead, you’ll find carefully selected cookbooks from some of the top chefs in the world.

After browsing through the books, wander through to the kitchen, and you’ll find that it’s here where the real action takes place. Regular cooking classes are hosted led by some top-rated chefs, including the likes of Margot Janse (Le Quartier), Reuben Riffel (Reuben’s), Luke Dale-Roberts (La Colombe) and charcuterie king Neil Jewell (Bread & Wine). Classes, which range from once-off three-hour demonstrations to longer courses are open to anyone who is passionate about food.
