Breedekloof Outdoor and Wine
7 - 9 October
Nothing beats a weekend of outdoor activity in the Cape, except arguably when it is paired with wine! This weekend we look forward to a weekend of exactly that at the Breedekloof Outdoor and Wine Festival. Mountain bike your way through the picturesque mountains splashing your way through fresh streams to amazing lookouts; watch top-class African sunsets whilst sipping on your favourite award winning local wines and to finish the day off race your friends by moonlight at the vineyard night run.
This festival is one for the whole family. As some of you may know, the Breedekloof Outdoor and Wine is an annual celebration of wine, food, adventure, music and the great outdoors. Yes, it is a wine festival, but the natural playground ensures that there is so much more on offer. As mentioned above there is a Mountain to Mountain bike race, a vineyard night run, a tagged fishing contest, guided bird watching walks, Fynbos mountain hikes, trout fishing and a community parade through Rawsonville. Whew, so much to do, possibly just enough time.
Most of the wineries host live entertainment over the weekend. The highlights are the annual Vonkelvrou breakfast at Botha Cellar, and Under the Tanks hosted by Seven Oaks and Waboomsrivier wineries. Another feature is Boshimela’s annual Dance Under the Stars. There are also a number of exhibitions including art, photographic, jewellery, clothing, craft and orchid.
The Breedekloof Outdoor and Wine festival wouldn’t be complete without some energy-fueling food! Visitors can sample local restaurants including Boshimela, Bergsig Bistro, Opstal Restaurant, Tin House, Mill & Oaks, Du Kloof Lodge, Fairhills Tea Garden and the Bistro@Jason’s. Spoilt for choice guests can also enjoy the festival catering at all participating wineries which serve food during the festival – stalls offer everything from roosterkoek to sushi, fillet ciabattas to freshly shucked oysters, farm cheeses and locally grown olives, delicious pancakes and good old fashioned hotdogs. An annual highlight is the skaapkop and Tripe dinner at Jason’s Hill Private Cellar where chefs serve up this South African delicacy followed by live music and dancing.
The Breedekloof is a family destination and during the festival the wineries make sure that kids have a good time too. Children will find pony rides, sand art, farm animal petting, jumping castles, boeresport and tractor rides.
The festival is the ideal time to explore the beautiful region. It is just 60 minutes from Cape Town, but there is also a wide variety of accommodation on offer should you choose to extend your stay.
